Recently, at the construction site of the
Tenglong Avenue Smart Expressway viaduct in Changzhou, Jiangsu, a fleet of LIUGONG
unmanned paving and compaction machines successfully completed asphalt pavement
laying operations. During the construction process, one paver worked in
coordination with seven rollers to smoothly complete the construction
procedures, including paving, initial compaction, recompaction, and final
compaction. This marks the first application of unmanned machine fleet asphalt
paving technology in Changzhou’s urban elevated road projects, providing a new
construction solution for smart road development.
Intelligent Collaborative Construction Enhances Operational Efficiency and Quality
The construction section spanned from
K12+335 to K13+321, with a total length of nearly 1 kilometer and a pavement
width of 12.25 meters. HMM-13 high-modulus asphalt concrete was used for the
surface course.
Prior to construction, technicians entered
parameters such as paving trajectories, number of compaction passes, and travel
speed into the control system. Once the equipment was activated, guided by the
BeiDou high-precision positioning system, the pavers and rollers automatically
carried out coordinated operations according to the preset plan, achieving
intelligent control throughout the entire paving and compaction process and
significantly reducing manual intervention.
LIUGONG’s unmanned paving and compaction
fleet integrates multiple key technologies, including BeiDou high-precision
positioning, intelligent sensing, automatic control, and fleet coordination.
During construction, the paver and roller share operational data in real time
via the Internet of Things (IoT). The system automatically optimizes compaction
routes, travel speeds, and overlap widths, while adjusting equipment
trajectories in real time based on construction conditions. This effectively
reduces human operational errors and further improves pavement smoothness,
compaction, and construction quality.
Compared to traditional construction
methods, this technology reduces on-site labor by approximately 60% while
improving construction safety and operational stability. The intelligent
obstacle-avoidance system and remote monitoring platform also meet the demands
of continuous construction under complex conditions—such as high temperatures
and nighttime operations—providing a more efficient and safer intelligent
solution for road construction.
Technology Proven Mature and Reliable Through Multiple Key Projects
The Tenglong Avenue project is not the
first application of LIUGONG’s unmanned construction technology. In recent
years, this technology has been validated through practical implementation in
multiple key infrastructure projects, demonstrating excellent construction
efficiency and stability.
In the S422 Provincial Highway project in
Nanjing, Jiangsu, LIUGONG first applied unmanned paving and compaction
technology to local highway construction, providing a model case for
intelligent road construction.

During the construction of the
Baoji–Yinchuan High-Speed Railway, unmanned rollers, leveraging cloud-based
intelligent planning and precision control technologies, achieved high-quality
compaction of the track subgrade, effectively enhancing construction efficiency
and engineering quality.
At the construction site of the Lawa
Hydropower Station, located at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters, LIUGONG’s
unmanned rollers overcame the challenges posed by the high-altitude environment
and complex working conditions to achieve deep compaction and prolonged
continuous operation, providing reliable support for large-scale hydropower
projects.
In the Qingfu Highway project in Gansu, LIUGONG
completed the world’s first application of unmanned construction for a
stabilized subbase layer, enabling a single operator to remotely manage three
machines. The construction trajectory accuracy reached 2–3 centimeters, and all
construction indicators met project requirements.
The successful implementation across
multiple projects demonstrates that LIUGONG’s unmanned construction technology
has reached a high level of maturity and can be widely applied to various
infrastructure construction scenarios, including highways, railways, and
hydropower projects.
New Technologies and Materials Synergistically Enhance Project Quality
In addition to intelligent construction
equipment, this project also utilized HMM-13 high-modulus asphalt concrete.
Compared to ordinary asphalt concrete, this material offers superior resistance
to rutting, fatigue, and water penetration, helping to improve pavement
durability and extend the road’s service life.
The combination of unmanned paving and
compaction technology with high-performance pavement materials not only further
enhances construction efficiency but also provides strong support for building
high-quality road projects.
Intelligent Construction Drives Industry Development
With the continuous advancement of digital
and intelligent technologies, unmanned construction equipment is playing an
increasingly important role in the road construction sector. LIUGONG continues
to advance the research and development of intelligent pavement construction
equipment and digital construction technologies, constantly improving
construction efficiency, engineering quality, and operational safety, and providing
more efficient and intelligent solutions for smart transportation and modern
infrastructure development.
