Rainfall during the rainy season can cause raw materials in asphalt mixing plants to become damp, lead to mud buildup on equipment components, and result in moisture ingress into electrical systems, all of which can affect equipment startup and production stability. Before restarting the equipment after rain, conduct a comprehensive inspection of key systems and follow standard procedures for startup, operation, and post-shutdown cleanup to reduce the risk of equipment failure.
I. Pre-Startup Inspection of Key Systems
Do not start the equipment during a storm or when there is a risk of flooding. Conduct post-rain inspections only after confirming site safety.
· Cold Material System: Remove any residual material that has been exposed to rain to prevent it from affecting the mix ratio. Check whether the conveyor belt is misaligned and whether mud or sand has accumulated on the idler rollers.
· Drying Drum: Inspect the contact between the support rollers and the drum, check the clearance of the thrust rollers, and remove any accumulated material inside the drum to ensure normal equipment operation.
· Dust Collection System: Check whether the baghouse dust collector has become damp. Before startup, perform a warm-up in accordance with the equipment manufacturer’s operating instructions to prevent clogging caused by damp filter bags.
· Electrical System: Check that electrical connections are secure and grounding is reliable. Pay particular attention to whether the load cell junction box is damp to avoid affecting the stability of weighing data.
After completing the inspection, perform a no-load test in accordance with equipment operating procedures to confirm that all systems are functioning normally. Before starting the induced draft fan, be sure to close the air damper as required by operating procedures to prevent equipment damage.
II. Standardized Startup and Recycled Material Production
When starting the reclaimed material burner, control the ignition intensity and feed time in accordance with specifications. Before officially introducing reclaimed material, first use virgin material to produce several batches of mix according to a formula that does not include reclaimed material. This serves to preheat the mixing drum and confirm that the asphalt piping is unobstructed.
Reclaimed material should not be introduced directly without prior preheating and operational verification. Specific ignition, preheating, and production parameters should follow the equipment manufacturer’s operating procedures.
III. Prompt Cleaning After Shutdown
Upon shutdown, reduce the regenerative burner’s heat output according to the prescribed sequence, stop the regenerative cold material system and related conveying equipment, and shut down the burner in accordance with operating procedures. The regenerative drum should continue to operate as specified.
The induced draft fan and drying drum may only be stopped after the aggregate drum’s discharge temperature has dropped to the safety range specified by the equipment.
At the end of each production day, clean the recycled raw material silo, transfer silo, metering silo, silo doors, and chutes, and check for any material adhesion or accumulation to prevent issues during the next startup and normal production.
IV. Long-Term Maintenance During the Rainy Season
When the equipment is shut down for an extended period, empty the aggregate and recycled material from the raw material hopper and, as much as possible, empty the powder silo to reduce the risk of material becoming damp or caking.
Recycled material production should be scheduled appropriately, and virgin material production should be interspersed as required by the equipment to avoid prolonged continuous processing of recycled materials.
If pulverized coal is used as fuel, storage duration and tank temperature must be controlled in accordance with equipment safety procedures. If abnormal temperatures are detected, prescribed safety measures must be taken immediately; processing is strictly prohibited until operating conditions and safety requirements have been verified.
Post-rain maintenance is a critical step in ensuring the stable operation of asphalt mixing plants. Conducting comprehensive inspections before startup, adhering to standard operating procedures during operation, performing timely cleanup after shutdown, and implementing long-term maintenance during the rainy season all help reduce the risk of equipment failure and ensure production safety and efficiency.
